Defining An Online Business

 
An online business is similar to any other business except your sales are made on the internet. Instead of purchasing a building, buying inventory and adding a group of people to assist customers questions and make sales, it is done online. Just like you need customers in your store to make sales and earn money, your online store must have customers also.
 
Your online store has a different shape and feel from a brick and mortar store. Since its located on the internet, there is really nothing physical about it, such as being able to touch it. It is very real and in many cases it can be much more of a profit center than your main street business.
 

Setting Up an Online Business.

 
Setting up an online business is much less of an daunting task from the other option discussed. Its quicker,requires less effort,cheaper and much easier to make changes and modify when changes are necessary. The old days of setting up a website and needing to know html is a thing of the past. My suggestion today is to use a blog and more specifically a wordpress blog. WordPress blogs continue to evolve and they are so versatile today that by using this platform you can literally create any kind of website you would like.
 

 
Before we discuss wordpress I would like to mention that Google also has own it blog. It is located at blogger.com. Its a great place to set up a free blog. The advantage is that your blog is hosted on their servers, so you don’t have to purchase a domain name and have to pay for a hosting provider. WordPress has the same options as blogger does. At wordpress.com you can set up a blog that is hosted on their servers just like blogger does. Although they are both great, the price is right and convenient, they do have some disadvantages. Since your blogs are located on their servers they are in control. In other words if they find something objectionable about your blog, they can remove it.
 

Your Online Business Using WordPress.

 
You don’t want your online store to disappear overnight, so my suggestion is to use the wordpress blog platform that you install on your own website. The cost is very low and much worth it. Go to wordpress.org and download their latest wordpress release. Its free. Now to set up a website you are going to need a domain. This is a vast subject in itself, but for the moment, I’m going to assume that that you have already decided on the domain name you would like to use and have checked to make sure it is available.
 
Once you have decided on your domain name and have determined that it is available, you need to purchase. There are literally thousands of places that you can purchase domains from. My favorites are namecheap.com and godaddy.com. They will both treat you right. Next you need to secure hosting. Think of hosting as the space or real estate that your blog will reside on. Depending on which type of domain, whether .com, .org, etc and the availability they are quiet reasonable. Normally you can obtain the domain you would like for an annual fee of 10 dollars or less.
 
We have really just briefly touched on a lot of subjects here.  A huge part of running a successful home online business involves setting goals which is the topic of another article on this website.   Hopefully I have given you some ideas on areas you can pursue. Although the internet has been in existence for a couple of decades, it still is rapidly changing and maturing. My thoughts on the internet is its a vast library of information. Although some of the information is bad or unreliable, the vast majority is useful and good. You have to be the judge. Become a part of the internets progression with an online business of your own.
